Juelz Santana

The Harlem rapper Juelz Santana is at it again, he has returned to the scene after what he calls "too long". This time he is accompanied by his new group of artists, known as the Skull GangJuelz has been working on his latest mixtape release with hisDiplomat associate, Jim Jones, as they team up for a Christmas record, A Tribute To Bad Santa, hosted by comedian Mike Epps. Having never done a Christmas record before, Juelz is sure to take listeners on a new and exciting experience, bringing a new sound and feeling to Christmas like only he could. He also just released the Skull Gang Takeovermixtape, which is in stores now.

Yo! Raps got the chance to talk to Juelz about the meaning behind his latest release, his new group of artists the Skull Gang, the collabo album with Lil Wayne, future plans, and even a look into what Christmas was like growing up in his home.

The Bad Santa mixtape has officially hit stores, how long were you working on this project?

It was actually something that we had done in 2 days. Jim called me up and asked me if I wanted to get on it. I said hell yea, he sent me like 4 songs, and we knocked them out in 2 days. It was a collective thing, so we kinda knocked it out fast.

This whole project was a tribute to Bad Santa, who came up with the idea behind this mixtape?

Last year Jim had put out the Christmas album, he wanted to do another one, and this year called me up and asked us if we wanted to get on it. He knows I always got artists, the artists all was with it.  I've never done any Christmas music before, so we said hell yea.

Besides you, who worked on this project?

It was Jim, his artists in the ByrdGang, my artists in the Skull Gang, and Mike Epps.

This project is pretty different, what made you guys decide to do a Christmas project?

You know we are always trying to do things different, stay afloat, you don't really expect this kind of thing from us, and it's unexpected. Like I said Jim had already had plans to do it, and was really presented to me. We are always putting together music working in the studio.

Mike Epps is a real funny guy, what is like working with him?

He's a funny dude, like he doesn't have to jump into character, it's just 2nd nature to him to be a clown, he didn't even have anything written down, he just started saying what ever came into his head. I known him for awhile, he's just automatically funny.

Who did the production on this project?

We got different producers, Jim is working wit Chic Santana, he did a lot of stuff with Murder Inc., he did a lot of records on me and Jim's last albums, and then he did a lot on this one. We got another group called Flame On, a couple different dudes, we call them the drum line.

So I heard you're going to do a mixtape this year for release on KOCH, what's the name of that project going be?

Well, the Skull Gang Takeover is in the streets right now, then we going to do another one, The Skull Gang Takeover Continues. Then my solo album, The Reagan Era, and we going to set it up with KOCH and let them put it out, people really feeling the movement right now. It's going to be a beautiful thing, we building the brand.

Do you have any plans to go on tour next year?

Yea, me and Jim are working on setting up a tour, a Hard Rock Tour, Hard Rock Cafe or the House Of Blues: Expect me to be on some of them dates with Weezy. I'm going to holla at him.

So is Weezy somebody that you plan on working with more in the future?

Yea, actually I just talked to Weezy yesterday, we got the I Can't Feel My Facealbum done, we just waiting for the politics to get done, and then we going to release it.

What projects or artists are you pushing right now?

Skull Gang, the movement, I got my man Richmond out of Richmond, VA. I feel like he's going to tear the South up, my R&B artists Starr, I feel like from her pen to her voice is just astronomical. When it comes to R&B, my man Casa, he's been with Diplomats from day one, he can do so many things and he can rap his ass off, and my man John Depps, he's from Queens, so the main focus is on the movement, and who ever the people ask for first is who they'll get. It's just about Skull Gang and Juelz Santana.

What's the situation with Dipset, are you guys going to do a new album?

Hell yea, It's still Dipset for life man, the only thing different is I'm not doing business with Cam, but it's still Dipset. Me and Jim still work together, Zeek, we got the Pop Champagne track out right now, we rocking! So the bird is still flying right now, I didn't want to copy the Diplomat movement, I wanted to do my own thing with the talent I had around me. It's just a new chapter in the book. Dipset for life, Skull Gang forever.

Is this the first time you ever did Christmas music?

Yea pretty much, you know we played around in the studio doing little stuff, I've talked about it before, but this was really the first time I ever did a Christmas album. So it's defiantly a new experience, it was a good experience.

What was Christmas like growing up in your house?

You know I had 4 brothers, so sometimes we had better Christmas then others. I know my mother always worked hard to try and keep a smile on our face, no matter what it was we were always thankful, but at the same time we weren't as fortunate as others, we weren't as the richest kids in the world. So it was interesting, waking up, sometimes you got the things you wanted sometimes we didn't. Some years were better then others, but most of all I know my mother tried her best, and that's what counts.

Are you planning on releasing a solo album anytime soon?

Hell yea, that's what this whole build up is about, my solo album is coming out a little while after the Skull Gang mixtape will drop. I just felt like I been gone for awhile, I didn't want to drop a album with 12 songs, I feel like I deserve to give the fans more then that, let them know what I been up too. I'm just going to hit them in the head till it's time to kill them. Look out for the Reagen Era mixtape too.

You recently did a song with Chemistry, what was it like working with them?

It was cool, that's another record someone called me up to get on, and I came through to do my Juelz thing. If a person ask me to do something, if it's beneficial to both parties then I'm down. They came to the studio, and loved my verse. So we made it happen.

Is there anything you want to shout out or promote?

Dipset 4 life, Skull Gang forever. Go get the Skull Gang Takeover mixtape, the Bad Santa tape, and the Reagen EraTakeover 2, the part 2 of the Skull Gang mixtape. We got videos coming out until the next mixtape, and my solo album.
